uHear developed for Unitron Hearing, Inc.

Simon & Woodside developed this custom iPhone application for Unitron Hearing over the course of four months in 2009. The application tests your hearing in various ways, displays your results as various graphs and charts and text specific to your hearing level, and will also show you the nearest audiologists on a google map.

The biggest challenge with this app was to meet the exacting audiometric standards of the company. Unitron makes hearing aids for a business, and has several audiologists on staff. Working with their doctor was fascinating as we designed tests to see how the earphones on the iPhone performed and experimented with audio output on the device until we had it just right to get truly accurate results. It wasn't easy and required a lot of back and forth but the result was worth it and really gives you an excellent and accurate sense of your individual hearing capabilities.

Graphic designer Tom Auger of Zeitguys designed the brilliant graphics, and we implemented the numerous interactive elements to his highly exacting specifications.

acceleratorcentre.ca developed for the Waterloo Research & Technology Park Accelerator

The Waterloo AC asked me to help them iron out an in-progress web site project. We collaborated with their project co-ordinator to establish a new vision for the look of the site, which we suggested that they might base on the strong interior design of the centre itself.

Then, they asked us to develop the necessary framework to implement the design. We based the grid structure around the theory of the golden ratio. Here is the home page:

WatStart.ca developed for WatStart

WatStart is a Waterloo-area community for technology entrepreneurs. Gary Will, founder of WatStart, asked us to design and build a replacement for his ageing website with a more modern application. We proposed an application with four main components—a weblog, a community wiki, a forum, and a feed of blog posts from entrepreneurs in all the local companies. We also developed the graphical look and feel of the site to emphasize the "startup/scratch-pad" nature of the activities, and integrated his existing logo. The result is www.watstart.ca.

For the application itself we integrated elements using two different frameworks, Ruby on Rails (for the weblog and forum) and PHP (for the wiki). We custom developed the aggregator on the front page ourselves in Rails.
