I was reading the manual for my HDTV (I know, who the hell does that?) when I noticed a GPL license notice and acknowledgment for among other things, "linux kernel". Wild.

Plug in a USB netcard and run a MythTV frontend on it. Wilder.
Whhaaaaaat? Can it be done?
It should be possible _if_ I can get enough info about the helper hardware the little MIPS processor in the TV uses to decode a HDTV data stream (which the 1.9GHz Athlon in my dedicated MythTV box can't) - the sources link above doesn't mention the D83 series (which mine is) at all. A suitably-constructed image file on a USB stick would behave just like a vendor-supplied firmware update and be slurped into the on-board Flash. I'll let you know of any progress.
Yes, I see what you mean. My TV is 32D64U. Does your manual contain a GPL notice? Did you buy yours in the USA? (there are separate GPL pages on different regional Sharp pages). E.g.: http://www.sharp-eu.com/gpl/ ... http://www.sharp.co.jp/support/aquos/source/download/index.html ... http://www.sharp.co.jp/support/aquos/source/download/fileset_001.html ... possibly others
Yes, it has a GPL notice. No, it was bought in Australia, and at the URL printed in the manual (http://www.sharp.net.au) there's no sign of source, so I've asked if they can shed any light (if they can't then I'll sic Linus on 'em for violating the GPL). In the mean time, a friend of a friend is trying to get me a service manual.
Wild, indeed!
I opened the manual for my LC-42X20E, went straight to the Appendix page, and there it was!
"The following open source softwarte components are included in this product: linux kernel, modutils, glibc, zlib, libpng"
This thing has a usb (service) port, just like the AppleTV, and they did great things with that, too! ;)

Have you found out more about?
Best regards tec
